In the village Marinaleda, in the Spanish autonomous region of Andalusia, one village has renounced the capitalist system. In Spain, about five million people are unemployed and the young people go there en masse to the streets to protest against the capitalist system. In Marinaleda a house costs 15 euros per month. Sport is free, a workout will set you back two euros per month. The villagers have fought 12 years against the government. Mayor Juan Sanchez Gorillo managed to buy 1,200 acres. Why is this the only example of such a village in Spain? It is not easy, lets Mayor Gorillo know. It was a revolutionary struggle. The economic crisis is a big scam by banks and corrupt politicians. Bankers and real estate agents are not welcome in the village. The people build their own home and get under the municipality. They contribute 15 euros per month. There is a direct democracy where the people's decision-making gave them their power back. Instead of hanging a portrait of the king in the office of Gorillo, the picture of Che Guevara hangs there, an Argentine revolutionary. The king comes from the past and stands for corruption, the mayor says. The utopia we created ceases to exist when we ourselves no longer believe in it, says Gorillo. We have an alternative to the capitalist system. The people are happy and feel solidarity.
